Bánh Cuốn Hương Bắc: Reviews & Ratings
Was craving some banh cuon but didn't have time to go to OC. Found this place and decided to give it a try. We ordered banh cuon dac biet (#9), spring rolls (#7), and bun cha gio thit nuong (#17). The banh cuon wasn't as good as OC, but it was still enjoyable and really hit the spot. The spring rolls I did not really care for, I wouldn't order that again. The bun was also really good. The portions were a lot, there was 2 of us and we couldn't finish it all, literally had a whole other meal for later. I would definitely come back for the banh cuon and the bun though! This is a mom and pop operation, it took probably 30 mins to get our food. I don't mind the wait to support a family operation like this, but just know that ahead of time, if you are in a hurry, this might not be the right choice.
The banh cuon and bun rieu was delicious but service was not so good. There was only one guy there when we were there and he seemed overwhelmed even though there were just 3 of us eating in the whole restaurant. As far as the food, the banh cuon is probably the best in the SGV and the Bun Rieu was one of the best I've ever had. Wish the service can get a little better.
Came on someone’s recommendation. My first impression was that they were understaffed and looked overwhelmed. There’s only a handful of full of tables in this modest restaurant. The wait was 30-45 minutes even though there weren’t that many customers. But we were invested after 15 minutes, so figured we’d rough it out. So glad we did because the food was sooooooo good. The portions are generous and everything tastes so fresh. The prices are also low compared to other places with less good food. They could easily raise their prices by $5 and I would still think it was worth it because it was so good. So come but be prepared to wait even when it’s not busy. Cash only. There’s street parking or if you can find the hidden side street that leads to their parking lot in the rear.
My friend and I stopped by Bánh Cuốn Hương Bắc and ordered the bánh cuốn đặc biệt, it instantly brought back memories of Bánh Cuốn Tây Hồ back in the ‘90s. The food was fresh, flavorful, and came out quickly. You can really tell it’s made with care. The fish sauce is crack and I just poured the entire sauce on top of my Bánh Cuốn. The owners, a husband and wife team, were incredibly kind and welcoming. It’s the kind of mom-and-pop spot you just feel good supporting humble place, great people, and even better food. Heads up: it’s cash only and parking is limited to street parking, so be ready for a short walk. But it’s worth it. I’ll definitely be back.
Huong Bac is a quintessential "hole-in-the-wall" eatery that surpassed our expectations during a recent out-of-state visit. Craving authentic Banh Cuon led us to this hidden gem. Despite our late arrival—merely 15 minutes before closing time— the lady welcomed us with open arms, allowing us to place our order. We opted for the #9 Banh Cuon Dac Biet and #12 Bun Rieu, eagerly anticipating our meal in the cozy ambiance of the small dining area. The kitchen was bustling, with the gentleman wrapping what seemed to be freshly made Gio Lua. The aroma of sweet and sour fish sauce wafted through the air, a hallmark of genuine Vietnamese cuisine. The wait was about 20 minutes, as the lady needed to boil water anew for our noodles and steam the Banh Cuon. She apologized for the delay, though we insisted it was our oversight for arriving late. Tasting the Banh Cuon at our hotel room was revelatory. The rice rolls were thin, the batter didn't make the banh cuon "cakey" nor runny, it maintains a delightful stretchiness. The seasoning of the meat and mushrooms was spot-on, with the addition of meat floss and fried onions enhancing the aroma. The Gio Lua boasted a pleasant chewiness without being mushy. However, the real standout was the house-made sweet and sour chili fish sauce—a masterful blend that added an explosive burst of sweet, tangy, and spicy flavors that I fell in love with their banh cuon instantly. As I'm writing this, I haven't had the chance to try the Bun Rieu yet because I was eager to share my exceptional experience with the Banh Cuon. It was so memorable that I felt compelled to write this review immediately. If I ever return to the area, Huong Bac will definitely be on my must-visit list!
Hand down the best banh cuon and bun rieu in the area. Banh cuon was handmade freshly in the restaurant - it’s so soft but tender at the same time, not as soggy like other banh cuon places. The only minus is that parking is limited and the restaurant is very tiny.
It's a one man band, so it took awhile for us to get our food. You will need patience. But when it comes out, it was so worth it! Next time I'd try calling and order ahead, or order a takeout. There's a lot next door that has zero marking, but you can park there.
Very small restaurant ran by one person so the service isn’t the quickest but definitely freshly made. I really enjoyed the meal and happy to support this local small business

Nestled in the heart of South El Monte, Bánh Cuốn Hương Bắc is a humble yet unforgettable Vietnamese mom-and-pop spot that’s making waves among aficionados of authentic banh cuon. This unassuming eatery captures the essence of traditional northern Vietnamese cuisine with rice rolls that are thin, tender, and perfectly textured—never cakey or runny, but with just the right stretchiness. The Bánh Cuốn Đặc Biệt stands out as their signature dish, generously filled with savory meat and mushrooms, elevated further by aromatic fried onions and meat floss. It's a delicate balance of flavors and textures that bring genuine warmth and comfort with every bite.
What truly sets Hương Bắc apart is their house-made sweet and sour chili fish sauce, a masterful concoction bursting with the perfect harmony of sweet, tangy, and spicy notes. It’s a bold accent that transforms the dish and lingers memorably on the palate. Beyond the banh cuon, their Bún Riêu also earns high praise—rich, vibrant, and comforting, it's one of the best in the San Gabriel Valley.
Despite the modest setting and limited staff, which can lead to waits of 20-45 minutes even when the restaurant isn't busy, the experience is worth the patience. The portions are generous, making it perfect for sharing or saving leftovers for another meal. The warmth of the owners—a husband and wife team—adds to the charm, creating a welcoming atmosphere that resonates with authenticity and family pride.
Parking is street-only, and cash is the accepted currency, typical of many beloved hole-in-the-wall gems. Still, every inconvenience feels minor when weighed against the fresh, flavorful dishes crafted with care. For anyone craving a genuine taste of northern Vietnamese cuisine in Southern California, Bánh Cuốn Hương Bắc is a destination not to be missed. It’s a place that reconnects you with timeless flavors and leaves you eager to return.
